Inside The Oak and Ivy Taphouse

Our Story

Where It All Began

The building which The Oak and Ivy Taphouse resides in has had about a dozen businesses over the years — starting as a gas station called Red Point Service Station in 1929. The Oak and Ivy Taphouse is run with love by a small family, who had a vision to turn this landmark into a charming local eatery and gathering place.

It all became a reality when the doors opened back in 2021, while also successfully keeping the familiar feel of craveable dishes — and of course the reputable beer we have become known for. Not only has our menu and beer stayed true to the roots of Smithfield, so have our values. We invite you to come for the food and stay for the experience.

A Century of Changes

Before the taps and tables, our tiny 770-square-foot building wore many hats. Over nine decades it housed roughly a dozen businesses, reinventing itself again and again as Smithfield grew around it — and a framed print honoring every past tenant still hangs on our wall.

In 2020 the space was rebuilt with reclaimed wood and corrugated metal into the rustic room you know today — and for the first time in its long life, opened its doors as a place to gather over great food and drink.

Local Lore

The Good Luck Shoe

During the 2020 renovation, a single weathered shoe turned up deep in the attic rafters — dating all the way back to 1929. As the story goes, the station’s original owners were a superstitious sort who tucked it away to ward off evil spirits. It sat undisturbed for nearly a century. Today it’s on display in the bar, a quiet good-luck charm keeping watch over every pint we pour.
